This technique is what we call in marketing The Decoy Effect where they intentionally introduce a third undesirable option between two sensible choices and then depending on it's pricing, they indirectly force you to buy either of the two sensible options. Just the fact that you call them dumb and recommend their Gold Edition is a testimony to the fact that their method not just works, it turns people into walking advertisements for their more expensive product.
